What's Under The Hood? Your Engine Explained

As a driver, we all know how important it is to keep our engine in the best shape possible. Our engine is what keeps our car, truck, or SUV getting us to where we need to be. But, have you ever stopped to think what exactly is under the hood? What's Under The Hood? Your Engine Explained

Why is Our Engine Important?

Your engine is essentially what makes your car move. Without it, it's just a metal home with fancy features that you need to push or tow around. Your engine is what powers the components of your vehicle and ensures that you get to your destination.

What Makes Up Our Automotive Engine?

While every vehicle has a different layout or design for the engine, you'll usually find the following:

Engine Block

Typically made of cast iron or aluminum and is used to house the cylinders and pistons.

Cylinder Head

This is the part of the engine that contains the rocker arms and valves that are connected to the camshaft and powered by the timing belt.

Timing Belt (Timing Chain)

A belt is usually made of rubber which is moved and keeps your camshaft and crankshaft synchronized.

Camshafts

This part is used to regulate the interval used in the opening and closing of valves.

Valves

Structures that use springs to control the amount of air and fuel that is allowed into the cylinders that have the pistons. These are controlled by the intake and exhaust camshafts

Pistons

These are small cylinders with a flat surface on the top. This is moved due to the expansion of compressed air. Pistons are used to transfer the energy created from combustion to the crankshaft to get the vehicle to move.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft converts the linear motion of the pistons into a rotational force, which is used to move the car.

Signs That Your Engine Needs Repair

If you're experiencing problems with your engine, you might need engine diagnostics to find out what exactly needs repair. Here are a few signs that you need engine repair:

• Check Engine light
• Shaking while idle
• Decreased engine performance
• Knocking or pinging coming from under the hood
• Increased exhaust smoke
• Engine stalls
• Leaking fluid
