Texting and Driving Statistics

An important issue that continues throughout Philadelphia, and the country, is distracted driving. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 2,841 deaths in 2018 were caused by distracted drivers and 400,000 injuries related to car crashes were reported. 
 

What Is Distracted Driving?      

There are four types of distracted driving:      
 
  • Visual — Anything that takes the drivers’ eyes off the road, even for a second, and takes away the ability to stay focused.       
  • Auditory — Unusually high volume of interior noises a driver hears such as loud music, loud children, or passengers talking too loudly.       
  • Manual — Manipulating accessories within the vehicle or any unrelated driving devices which interfere with concentrating on the road.       
  • Cognitive — Driving behavior that is unfocused such as “spacing out,” deep thinking, or sleepy driving.
According to the NHTSA, distracted driving is any activity a driver engages that takes the attention away from driving. This includes talking or texting on your cell phone, eating food, using the navigation system, drinking, changing the radio channel, or even talking to passengers. In short, it’s anything that takes the focus away from your primary task, which is driving.      
 

Distracted Driving Statistics Among Adult Drivers      

While distracted driving often occurs because of temporary lapses in judgment, the most common occurrence is texting and driving. A 2020 study conducted by "Thetexting and driving Zebra," a leading insurance comparison website, found that a third of drivers' surveyed between the ages of 18 and 64 stated they texted while driving, and a staggering 33.9% between the ages of 55 and 65 believed they handled multitasking moderately well. There appears to be a disconnect between awareness and reality, especially since distracted driving and using cell phones contribute to 14% of fatal car crashes nationwide.   
 

Distracted Driving Statistics Among Teenage Drivers   

Teenage drivers account for a large population of drivers nationwide and in Philadelphia. When “The Zebra” surveyed teen drivers, they found that 40% of them admitted to using a cell phone or texting and driving, which contributed to a car accident. The data also showed that 19% of teenagers often surfed the internet on their cell phones. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that car crashes among teens aged from 16-19 are the highest age group. And in 2017, there were 2,364 teens killed in crashes and 300,000 were injured. Approximately 51% of the reported car crashes occurred between Friday, Saturday and Sunday.    
 
Additional factors that contribute to distracted driving among teens include:   
 
  • Inexperience 
  • Speeding 
  • Seat Belt Use 
  • Alcohol Use 
  • Nighttime Driving  
 

Texting and Driving Facts in PA    

There has been a 9.67% increase in texting and driving violations in PA and insurance penalties nationwide have increased by an alarming rate of 8,000%, according to the latest data available. The data in PA further shows the average rate increase is $142.62 per policy when distracted driving is the contributing factor for an increase. Aside from a rate increase, it is a summary offense in PA when caught texting and driving, which can result in a $50 fine. Specifically, the law states that using an Interactive Wireless Communication Device (IWCD) to send, receive or write any text-based communication is a violation. It’s important to educate new drivers on the dangers of not paying attention at the wheel.
