Signs of Failing Brakes

Failing brakes are very serious and require immediate attention. If your car is showing signs of failing brakes, you will need to schedule brake repair as it is not safe to drive a car with poor brakes. You risk the lives of your passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, as well as your own. As a resident of Pennsylvania, however, this shouldn’t be a big concern. Through your yearly state inspection, technicians will catch the wear of your brakes before they come close to the point of failure. But, we’ll address some of the warning signs here in case there is ever an opportunity where you need to know them.

Early Warning Signs

The first signs your brakes might fail soon are when you hear loud scraping or squealing sounds while braking. That sound happens when your brake pads no longer have any friction material. The metal backing is gripping your steel rotors and damaging them whenever you try to stop. You also might notice your brake pedal feels “spongy,” rather than being more solid. This can happen when you have too little brake fluid or air in your brake lines. It also might occur if the master cylinder is wearing out and in need of repair.

Signs Failing Brakes are Imminent

If you ignore the early warning signs of failing brakes, more serious conditions will arise. Those include your brake pedal pulsing when you apply the brakes. When your brake pedal starts to pulse, and especially if you hear loud metal scraping sounds, you likely are tearing up your brake rotors. Sooner or later, the brakes will stop working altogether, and that makes a car a danger to all.

You also can lose your braking power if you let too much air get in the lines, and one or more lines stop working. When that happens, you have no braking power at all. That increases the chances you might rear-end another car. It also increases the odds of running a red light and endangering everyone in your car, and others on the roadway. A good service station can give you options for fixing your brakes with genuine OEM and top-brand aftermarket parts. That give you pricing flexibility without sacrificing quality
