Why is my Air Conditioning Not Working?

It’s a hot summer day, the sun is up in the sky, you’re in your car, driving. What could possibly ruin this perfect day? We’ve got an answer – broken air conditioning. Nothing can be worse than having to deal with A/C problems as temperatures begin to soar. But why is the air conditioning not working when you need it most?

How Does a Car Air Conditioning Work?

driving in summer with air conditioningThe A/C system is a closed loop that has high-pressure and low-pressure sides. There are three main parts – an air condition compressor, condenser, and an evaporator. Both, an air condition compressor and condenser are located on the high-pressure side. In the air condition compressor, the refrigerant in gas form is compressed by a pump and pushed out into the condenser. When this pressurized gas moves into the condenser, the heat is created. The condenser radiates this heat as the gas moves through the coils and tubes, which in turn, cools it down, turning it back into a liquid. Up next is the evaporator, which is in the low-pressure side of the A/C and is located in your cabin. When the liquid enters the evaporator, the liquid evaporates, taking all the heat with it. And when the fan is blowing outside of the evaporator, it blows cool air into the cabin. As the refrigerant moves back into the compressor, the cycle starts all over again.

How to Tell if the Car Air Conditioning is Not Working?

It’s better to catch any issues with your air conditioning system early on before the weather gets too hot and the repair gets too expensive. Be aware of these signs that indicate the problems with the car:

- A/C only works when the car is moving

- Noise coming out of the A/C system

- A/C blows hot air while heat blows cold

- No to little difference in low and high settings of the air pressure

- Weird or unusual smells

- Air starts cold but progressively get warmer

- Vents are not working
